StanChart’s Abrar Anwar is new chairman of BMCC

Kuala Lumpur, 27 August 2020 – Abrar A. Anwar, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Standard Chartered Malaysia has been elected as Chairman of the British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce Berhad (BMCC) effective 25 August 2020.

His appointment was decided upon following the 2nd BMCC’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at the Intercontinental Hotel Kuala Lumpur. Abrar succeeds Andrew Sill, Managing Director and Country Head of Commercial Banking, HSBC Malaysia who served as BMCC Chairman for the past five years.

Abrar has close to 30 years of experience in corporate and investment banking and his career has brought him to countries such as India, the UK and Bangladesh.

Abrar has achieved many successes including setting up the first “Syndication and Structured Finance” business in Bangladesh (for the then ANZ Grindlays Bank) along with the successful closure of milestone transactions in the energy and power, infrastructure, telecom, aviation, domestic and export-oriented industries.

As Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Standard Chartered Malaysia, Abrar is an instrumental figure in implementing the Bank’s business strategies and overall corporate governance in Malaysia.

Abrar has served on the BMCC Board since 2017, having assumed previous roles as the Chamber’s Treasurer and most recently Co-Deputy Chairman. Commenting on his latest appointment, Abrar said, “I am delighted and honoured to take the helm as BMCC Chairman. There is an illustrious history to the BMCC and I have seen it accomplish great things in recent years. For this, my commendations and thanks to Andrew Sill for his years of strategic guidance and invaluable contributions in leading the BMCC to where it is today.

Abrar has served on the BMCC Board since 2017, having assumed previous roles as the Chamber’s Treasurer and most recently Co-Deputy Chairman. Commenting on his latest appointment, Abrar said, “I am delighted and honoured to take the helm as BMCC Chairman. There is an illustrious history to the BMCC and I have seen it accomplish great things in recent years. For this, my commendations and thanks to Andrew Sill for his years of strategic guidance and invaluable contributions in leading the BMCC to where it is today.

“I look forward to working with the Board, the Executive Office and fellow members to create an environment in which both UK and Malaysian businesses can prosper, capture trade and investment opportunities, thus strengthening bilateral trade relations between both countries.”

Andrew Sill, appointed as BMCC Chairman in 2015 announced his decision to step down at the AGM attended by Chamber members, however, remains on the Board and will continue to be involved in the overall direction and growth of the BMCC. “Congratulations to Abrar and the new office bearers” Andrew remarked.

“It has been a privilege serving as Chairman over these years and I reflect on the many milestones and new benchmarks we have set together.

I wish to thank my fellow members on the Board, Jennifer Lopez and her team at the Executive Office and all our BMCC members for their indispensable support and collaborations along the way,” he added.

The AGM also saw the appointment of a new Deputy Chairman in Andrew Diamond, CEO of IsItUp Dotcom Sdn Bhd. He steps in for David Ng, Managing Director of International SOS (M) Sdn Bhd who will also remain on the Board after serving as Deputy Chairman since 2015. Nik Tasha Nik Kamaruddin, Director at Ipsos Sdn Bhd continues her role as BMCC Treasurer.

The BMCC thanks Andrew Sill and David Ng for all their guidance and contributions and welcomes Abrar A. Anwar and Andrew Diamond as new office bearers of the BMCC.
