How to extract Mauritius from the 45th place in global competitiveness?December 12, 2017
Mauritius, South Africa, Rwanda and Botswana come out on top of the African list of countries most competitive countries in the world. The list is compiled by the World Economic Forum.
Although Mauritius ranks first among African countries, it is still only at number 45 in the global index. But there are many countries that will tear us apart to reach this number.
Overall, Mauritius is credited for its ability to streamline its goods market, build solid infrastructure and promote a healthy workforce.
But if only they knew how much the Mauritians are being paid, and what is our minimum wage, our country would probably drop further down the list.
Nevertheless, the 45th place gives the country a good reason to enhance its facilities, increase its efficiency in order to climb the ladder and we can do it.
We need a bit of tweaking here and there, a new government says some, and a better leadership? Will that do?
On the other hand, South Africa and Rwanda also did very well and have improved their global ranking since 2015.
Notice that South Africa is not far from Mauritius in the global ranking, sitting at no 47. If they settle their political issues, they might just be as efficient and competitive as us. Thus more reason for us to buckle up.
Their (South Africa and Rwanda) continued growth can be attributed to the uptake of technology, efficient financial markets and a focus on strengthening institutions.
