To commemorate the release of the Samsung Galaxy A53 5G, a new study of 1,500 adults aged 18-25 years discovered that a staggering 72 percent have been inspired to take up a new hobby as a direct result of watching clips on social media networks – with more than half spending four hours or more a week watching them on their smartphones – equating to a whopping 208 hours per year.

Gen Z members are not only acquiring new activities online, such as roller skating, but up to four out of ten have used their smartphone cameras to document their own hobbies for social media.

TikTok (55 percent), Instagram (51 percent), and YouTube (48 percent) were found to be the most inspiring social media platforms for discovering new hobbies, with the most inspiring ‘How To’ video clips including Extreme Make-up (15 percent), Meditation (11 percent), Cleaning Technology (9 percent), and Digital Illustration including Pet Portraiture (7 percent ).

Another new interest to add to the list is Bubble Nails, a new trend that imitates soap bubbles on a gel manicure.

Inspired by the new A53 5G device, which promotes content creation on the go, the study discovers that young adults are embracing their strange and wonderful interests online.

More hobbies

Four in ten describes their newfound hobbies as ‘Awesome’ and a third (32 percent) describing them as ‘Underrated.’ Surprisingly, photography (29%) was voted the most popular Gen Z hobby.

This is followed by meditation (16%) and knitting (16%). (13 percent ). Almost one-fifth of those polled said their hobby makes them feel liberated, and 74% of those who post content said seeing their hobby content do well on social media made them smile.

When asked about the magic formula for creating good social media visual content, nearly half (46%) of those polled said good editing was the most important, followed by a good camera (44%), humour (43%), length of video (38%), and authenticity (36%).

The A53 5G, which was released on April 1st, has a 64MP camera and an AI-powered camera, making it ideal for on-the-go content capture, as well as a two-day battery life, which will satisfy the third of those who voted battery as the most important (32 percent) factor in ensuring your device is ready at all times.

As a result of engaging with followers, nearly half of those who have posted content about their hobbies on social media (48 percent) have formed a new online business. Almost nine out of ten content creators said their posts were well received by their followers, with many positive comments and shares.

While more than a third (37%) agree that sharing their unusual hobby content on social media has increased their following by 20% or more.

Other important motivators for sharing include showing off new skills (26%), personal enjoyment (25%), connecting with others (24%), and learning new things (23 percent).

Unconventional hobbies

“After two years of various lockdowns where our creativity could have been stiffened, it’s no surprise we’ve seen an increase in awesome and unconventional hobbies coming from this generation,” Annika Bizon, Marketing and Omnichannel Director for Samsung UK & Ireland, says.

This audience craves expression, and they are increasingly turning to social media platforms to watch, create, and share their content. With devices like our new Samsung Galaxy A53 5G, Generation Z has the ultimate tool to capture better shots thanks to the AI-powered camera, multi-lens camera, and longer-lasting battery – so they can focus on bringing fun and playfulness to content creation.”

DeVante Walters, a 27-year-old London roller-skater, understands the importance of capturing his passion in real-time via smooth motion video capture.

“There has been a significant rise in the roller-skating community in the past twelve months. Being without the gym for so long meant we had to adapt and find new interests that made us feel alive! That’s what it’s all about – a feeling.  For me, roller-skating has always been a passion, so I took to social platforms like TikTok to share my moves, tips, and tricks – including dance routines.  It’s totally transformed my life and by using my Samsung Galaxy A53 5G I can shoot stable videos like a pro! Above all else, it is so important to connect with others, through inspiring them to join in, discover their inner talents and have fun with it.”
